Yesterday, while driving around, I spotted something that gave me pause. I believe it was a sewer manhole (large metal tube sticking out of the ground about 9 inches) but perhaps it was another type of manhole? Getting to the point, setting on top of the manhole cover was a pair of very nice, shiny black men's dress shoes.

They were definitely deliberately placed there, but by whom? Did someone need to go down into the manhole and didn't want to get their nice shoes dirty, so they set them there? But how did they do that after going down into it, would they close it after themselves? Were they found in the road, and someone set them there, so if the owner was looking for them they might be easy to spot?
